To calculate your runway, divide your burn rate by the total cash reserves. This calculation lets you figure out how long your company has to survive on your current bank balance. If your company has a burn rate of $5,000 per month and a cash balance of $75,000, your company can survive for 15 more months before you run out of money at your current rate. Here’s how burn rate is calculated. So how do you calculate burn rate? In this context, burn rate is a representation of a company’s monthly operating costs. For example, if a company is seven months into its operating year and has spent $850,000 to date, the burn rate is approximately $120,000 per month. The “simplest” way to calculate runway is to take your cash balance and divide by your burn rate. In the example above you would have 9 months of runway with a cash out date in February. Runway (in months) = Cash Balance / Burn Rate. However, you may want to exclude large one-time expenses like legal fees. Burn rate is used to describe the rate at which a company is losing money – in other words, it describes negative cash flow. Typically, burn rate is expressed in terms of cash spent each month. For example, if your company has a burn rate of $650,000, your company would be spending $650,000 a month. The burden rate is the allocation rate at which indirect costs are applied to the direct costs of either labor or inventory. You should add burden to the direct cost of either labor or inventory when you want to present the total absorbed cost of these items. Looking at the above formula of calculating CPI, a more direct formula for the burn rate would be: Burn Rate = 1/CPI = 1/EV/AC = AC/EV Where AC is the Actual Cost , and EV is the Earned Value .
